Upcoming SAT Test Dates:  June 2nd   *   Upcoming ACT Test Dates: June 9th

Hi! I am Deb Evans, a test prep tutor in Conroe/The Woodlands area! One-on-one tutoring is the best way for your student to learn the skills that he or she needs for success. I occasionally offer group workshops in The Woodlands and Conroe, which are great introductions to the material; however, one-on-one tutoring that is customized to your individual needs is our recommendation for every student. It's affordable! I offer private tutoring for less than some of the big companies charge for large group classes.

I'm a mom, too, and I know that these days families are busier than ever. Test Prep tutoring is just one of many activities on your family calendar. My tutoring services are offered at times and locations that are convenient to YOU. You're not locked in to the same day every week - you might need Tuesday this week and Wednesday next week! You're not forced to block out three days a week either - I don't know any high schooler who can set aside that kind of time. Teens are busy these days! Tutoring can take place in your home or any location in The Woodlands or Conroe that fits your schedule. You don't have to drive to an over-priced learning center or find a way to fill the time that your child is there.

Just like the large test prep companies, I offer detailed feedback on students' practice tests, so I know each student's strengths and weaknesses. Your child's tutoring plan will be based on your child's needs (not a standardized one-size-fits-all plan) which maximizes study time and minimizes your cost. Unlike the large companies, I keep my rates low (no middleman) and I only charge for my direct tutoring time - prep work, grading tests, writing evaluations, parent phone calls, and email correspondence are free services, included for all my student clients.

Private SAT Tutoring is $65/hour; however, our pre-paid packages bring your hourly rate down!  For example, a pre-paid 10-hour block is just $500 ($50/hour). You can schedule your time at your convenience - two - three hours at a time, once or twice per week... My travel time is included to Conroe and The Woodlands. A small travel fee may apply to other locations. Share your time with a friend, IF you have similar skills and needs, and you'll each pay a discounted fee.  Email debsclasses@yahoo.com for more details and scheduling information.

Diagnostic - not sure what you need or not ready to commit to ongoing tutoring? Schedule a three-hour diagnostic exam with Deb and receive an evaluation detailing your child's strengths and weaknesses with a strategy plan. $125.

Options for Tutoring - We offer one-on-one tutoring in ten- or five-hour prepaid blocks, scheduled as 2.5 or 2 hour sessions once per week. Students must commit to completing homework to practice the skills they are learning. (I recommend two hours of personal study time for each hour spent with me in tutoring.) In general, ten hours is sufficient for good students who just need to learn/practice test-specific skills. Students who need extra help with content skills, such as grammar and reading comprehension, may need additional tutoring time. Students who are weak in vocabulary skills should plan to spend extra time on their own reviewing vocabulary.

What will you learn? ALL students will learn the test-taking STRATEGIES needed for success, covering all sections of the test: Writing (Grammar), Essay Writing, Critical Reading, Vocabulary, and Math. The SAT and PSAT, specifically, are all about CRITICAL THINKING; they don't just test mastery of content skills. You will learn how to analyze the questions, avoid trap answers, and beat the tricks the SAT likes to play. Even the ACT, which is a more straight-forward test of your skills, requires some critical thinking skills to excel.

I will teach you strategies and skills during our time together and work with you through practice questions, however, you WILL NEED TO COMPLETE HOMEWORK AND PRACTICE TESTS ON YOUR OWN to fully prepare for the tests. Treat Test Prep just like one of your other classes. It is that important!

My specialties are teaching the Critical Reading, English, Grammar, and Writing portions of the tests. Go in-depth and study exactly what you'll need to know to ace the 25-minute timed essay, as well as excel in answering the multiple-choice Writing, Grammar and Reading sections. I also coach students through writing their college application essays.

Please note: Our recommended minimum is 10 hours. However, most students should plan additional tutoring sessions for best results - depending on your test goals. 20 hours is sufficient for most students. All tutoring is customized to your child's needs. For your best results, you should plan to spend about two hours of study time for each one hour you spend with me.

Please note I only tutor math as part of the overall strategies, providing an overview of the math skills needed. If your child needs extra help with understanding math concepts, I'm happy to offer referrals to tutors who specialize in math.

SAT OR ACT??? Almost all colleges will accept either test, so most students take both tests and then send their best score to their college choices; however, some students WILL do better on one than the other. Click here to find out which is best for you.

SAT True or False:

1. The SAT tests how smart you are, or how well you understand math and english; Only kids who make good grades will do well on the SAT.
False!  The SAT tests how well you take the SAT! Many smart students bomb this test, not because they aren’t intelligent, but because they just don’t understand the test. This is a test of LOGIC and CRITICAL THINKING. It is designed to TRICK you. A lot of students who have earned high grades throughout school do not do well on this test because they approach it wrong. It is NOT a straight-forward test of what you know. Often, students with lower, overall grades who understand the logic behind the test do very well. Learning the recurring patterns and hidden schemes of the questions is the key to acing this test.

2. Start SAT prep as a senior.
False! Students take the PSAT during the fall of their Junior year for National Merit Scholarship Awards. They should take the SAT for the first time the following spring. The same prep works for both exams. (The primary differences are that the SAT includes the essay and a bit harder math, including some Algebra II.) For the best results, SAT tutoring and test prep should begin when students are sophomores.   This puts time on their side by conquering the patterns of these standardized tests and lessening text anxiety early.

3. The PSAT/NMSQT test is only a practice SAT and is no big deal!
False! It is a HUGE deal because it can mean incredible scholarship offers for students if they qualify in their junior year.  Some perks are: full ride, free tuition, honors dorms, money to study-abroad, graduate money, etc. Every freshman and sophomore should take this test for practice; every junior should take it because that is when it counts for ALL the big scholarship offers! As a practice test, it will also give you a game plan of what you need to work on most before the SAT.

Do you Have $80,000 Saved Up For College?

Not only is this the average price for a university education PER STUDENT, but it’s the price of a mid-range college.  An upper-tier school could run as much as $60,000 per year! Are you frustrated that you make too much money for grants, but not enough to pay for college?

Is your student’s SAT/ACT score too low to get into his or her favorite university?

We all know that every college has a minimum standardized test score requirement. Many students fail to enter the college of their choice because they are unable to reach an adequate score. Even if you score the minimum requirement, that might not be enough to get you in when compared with other applicants. You need to stand out. Don't settle for the minimum - aim higher! Discover the logical patterns of the SAT and raise your score.

IF your student isn’t good at math. . .

Good News! You don’t have to be a math expert to ace the math section of the SAT. Every math section uses the same recurring times of problems that have the same types of answers. If students can learn these patterns, they can quickly and easily get answers right! We teach tricks that make calculators obsolete and help test-takers get answers quicker than ever before.

IF you’re worried about wasting another dime on test prep. . .

Our program is AFFORDABLE. There’s no need to spend thousands of dollars on an SAT prep course. We offer private tutoring for less than the "big guys" charge for large group classes.

Deb Evans has been  tutoring students and teaching private classes in a variety of areas for over 10 years. For more information about Ms. Deb, visit her "About Me" page.

What our clients say...

from a former student, now attending Texas A&M

"Deb Evans has been a part of my life for many years, and for that I am so thankful. She has taught me everything from grammar basics to taking a passion in what I am writing about. Once frustrating to me, writing has become my form of expression as well as a  great joy in my life. Many English teachers I have had in my life frustrated me with a greater concern for mechanics than content.  Deb Evans balances the two perfectly, correcting my mistakes while still caring for my writing as if it were her own. I still rely on her services today, and every time I get her help on a paper I can submit it with confidence no matter how much the teacher likes that red pen;)" Sharon Joncyk

and a few words from her mom...

I have known Deb Evans for over 8 years. Both my children had always homeschooled. Deb's classes were their first "classroom" experiences. but they immediately took to Deb because of her charismatic personality and kindness. As a teacher, she taught concepts in a non-threatening way, took time to explain things, and showed encouragement. My children did not "like" to write, and that was a big reason for our looking elsewhere for "help". Within the first few weeks they were EXCITED to write. I watched small paragraphs become large paragraphs, short/quick written papers became well-worded, well-thoughtful essays. Both my children now are in college, and writing assignments take little effort. It's as natural, and as "fun" to them as reading their favorite book. In fact, they both write for "fun" now. My daughter has been nominated twice for Honors English at Lonestar because her teachers have been so impressed with her papers. Deb is still a fixture in their lives. Before they turn something in, she is the first to read it. They still rely on her opinion, and advice. This has been true for personal pieces, college assignments, and essays for scholarships. She is not only a mentor, but a family friend. God has truly blessed us with her in our lives, Robin Joncyk

from a mom...

... so apparently YOU are the TEACHING QUEEN - not only do you rock the photog classes but you can also demolish the wall of fear surrounding ... da da da dum .... WRITING! Oh the horror - ANYthing but writing!!!! --- until today! Pull up to pick up my non-writer, who hops in the car & says: "I love writing". I almost turned the car around to see if I picked up the right kid! Seems I'll be signing my VERY reluctant writer up for your classes this fall. hmmmm.... do you put a spell on them?!? LOL Whatever it is - keep on keeping on! Anne Sullivan only THOUGHT she was the Miracle Worker - nope, it's YOU!! :-) thnx!!  Chris Darnell

another mom...

Alex enjoyed your camp very much and it's encouraging to see her actually enjoy writing.  You do have a gift with these students and your tutoring this summer has been extremely helpful.      Judy Dueitt

from a mom... you are really good with these kids & it shows ... they LIKE you!  highest teen compliment I can think of.  C. Darnell

another mom...

I met Deb Evans during the school year 2008-2009. She is very dedicated to teaching kids.   She has taught my oldest son how to pull stories out of his mind, and put these on paper.  He has taken a great interest in creative writing and has really enjoyed her classes. He will be taking more classes with Deb during the summer and this following school year. I am happy to know that my son takes a real interest in writing because of the great things he learned from Deb this past school year. I wish her the best in all of her teaching adventures!  Brenda Stuart Rodriguez

These exams test more than just a student’s knowledge; they test time-management skills, logical aptitude and more. We teach students a strategic and logical approach to taking the PSAT / SAT. Even if you don’t “know” the answer, our strategies can help you to logically deduce the correct answer!

There is no need to spend a fortune on SAT prep. Our workshop designed to help students master the strategies behind the test and learn how to get the correct answers. This program takes students step by step through each section of the SAT [Critical Reading, Math, Writing,] and gives them a plan for success for each question type. Please note that this one-day workshop is an overview of effective strategies and does not cover content.

Essay writing for College Applications and Entrance Exams Workshop   upcoming dates to be announced

Policies

Scheduling: All tutoring is pre-paid in five or ten hour blocks. 2-3 hour sessions may be scheduled during the weekdays or evenings or on the week-ends, once or twice per week.  I will attempt to schedule your child at the same time each week if desired, although I cannot guarantee this.

Additional Fees: A travel fee may be required based on your location; ask for details. You will always be notified in advance of ANY additional fees if any apply. We never charge “surprise” fees.

Refunds: We do not offer refunds of prepaid sessions.

Cancellation: Twenty-four (24) hours’ advance notice is required for cancellations. All tutoring sessions canceled within 24 hours of the scheduled start time are subject to full payment penalty unless a makeup session can be mutually arranged with the tutor within the next 72 hours. No-shows (no notice) are charged at the full lesson rate without the option to attempt a reschedule. Strict no-show policies are an unfortunate reality of the tutoring business and I appreciate your understanding in this matter; please be considerate of the other students who may have really wanted that time for their own lesson! This is also a way to ensure that students take their tutoring as seriously as I do - it's essential to be committed to improvement!

Payment: We accept payment by check, cash, or credit card via paypal. All sessions must be pre-paid.

Privacy Information: All information shared with Deb Evans and her employees is completely confidential. We recognize our students' and their families' privacy and maintain our information solely for the intention of providing the best possible tutoring services. We will never share your information with any other entities.

Guarantee/Liability: As an individual tutor, not associated with a large, over-priced center, I feel that I am in partnership with you and your child. I guarantee that I will always give my best effort to your child. While I am convinced that my tutoring service will result in an improved score for him or her, I do not guarantee a quantifiable number score increase. The primary reason is that my tutoring is only one contributor to an improved score. The larger factor is the student's individual effort in studying/learning the material and putting in his or her best effort on test day. Only individual students can guarantee how much effort they are willing to put in, not just the physical act of completing practice exercises and homework, but the mental effort to think about the material and practice it on a daily basis. Students who go above and beyond in their efforts will score above and beyond!  Unless students practice materials every day, complete homework assignments and actively engage in each lesson, they will not maximize their potential and sufficiently learn the material. There is a limit to the extent of what a student can learn if the student is not actively engaged in learning and reinforcing the material at home.

I guarantee that I will do MY part - your children must guarantee that they will do their part.
